Lula Lounge & Casa Salvador Allende Toronto celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Violeta Parra.
Toronto artists pay tribute to songwriter, activist, folklorist, ethnomusicologist and visual artist, Violeta Parra, who is known internationally as The Mother of Latin American folk music. Celebrated as one of the founders of the politically inflected Nueva Canción (New Song), Parra painted, wrote poetry, sculpted, and wove arpilleras (folk tapestries) and is composer of the poignant, Gracias a la Vida (Thanks to Life).
The concert is presented in conjunction with a community mural project at Brock and Dundas which honours Violeta and the indigenous Mapuche people of Chile and Argentina, for whom she advocated in her work.
