Party: AUDIOASIS on KEXP Presents: Crater + Hosannas + Tokyoidaho + DJAO [DJ Set]

Audioasis on KEXP Presents:

Crater
Industrial-leaning electro-pop duo at the confluence of dance and grunge.
“Romantically ominous (or maybe ominously romantic), industrial-leaning electro-pop”- Gorilla vs. Bear
"90s pop-indebted vocals that warp through stabs of breathy unease, creating dynamic highs and lows.”- CMJ"“The pair uses some of industrial music’s essentials — harsh percussion, chainsaw synths — but redirects their energy into a melodic spiral of goth-pop.”- Idolator

Hosannas | PDX
Hosannas are a psychedelic dance outfit based in Portland, Oregon. Brothers Brandon and Richard Laws have been writing and performing music together, across a wealth of genres and under a variety of monikers, for over a decade. Richard was a student of jazz—having studied under under Mel Graves—turned ambient synth experimentalist. Brandon found equal joy in beat-making and guitar wizardry, exercising the latter as a touring member of indie rock acts like Ramona Falls and Aan. Their work as Hosannas is the sound of two incredibly intimate musical collaborators braiding together their multitudinous musical fascinations, into a single odd and splendid textile. We might consider it Pop gone on an Ayahuasca safari. This is music that tantalizes us to dance and sway, propelling us forward through a Labyrinthian voyage into the psyche.

There’s a theory among classical scholars that artist green rooms are called “green rooms” because they were established in ancient times for performers to pay tribute to Dionysus - the god of nature, wildness, decadence and chaos. There is a type of sacred drama inherent in live music, when a performer seizes on this mythology of wildness. This is a mythology that Hosannas deeply understand and celebrate in their exhilarating live performances, where the two brothers access an intuitive place of deep harmony with one another. This is most prevalent in their vocal harmonies, where at times, it’s near impossible to discern where one brother’s voice ends and the other’s begins. It’s no surprise that they’ve been asked to share the stage with the likes of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Dan Deacon, Akron Family, The Dodos, Gardens & Villa and The Shins.

Tokyoidaho
First off, what’s with the name anyway? What (if anything) does Tokyoidaho mean? Could be an oblique reference to Seattle and where it sits geographically and culturally (somewhere between the neon-future and the old west). Could be that weird mash-ups are the only googleable names left in this crazy mixed-up world!

O.K. so what exactly does Tokyoidaho SOUND like anyway? Will I even LIKE it? Well, I could use some descriptive adjectives like, “Crunchy” or “Squishy” or maybe even “Interesting” to describe the bands’ sound, but how about something like: “Radiohead meets Pink Floyd at a middle school kickball tournament circa 1978″ or maybe “Like a cross between vintage Eno and Ringo’s drumkit falling out of the back of a 12-passenger van “, or if I was feeling particularly inspired then maybe I could say something like “The ghost of Curtis Mayfield in the middle of a heated funk workout with a malfunctioning R2-UNIT”, however those descriptions would just make them sound pretty silly and pretentious and that is NOT the effect we are going for here! I reckon the best bet we have then is to just have a listen….

DJAO [DJ Set]
A producer/vocalist of electronic music: hazy bass, sung echoes, swung-out drums, zones. Alex began to produce in earnest after joining up with Dropping Gems in 2010, and his live performances have since evolved to their current state: a combination of singing, triggering, and dancing. His music covers a wide fuzzy swath of the electronic spectrum. It exemplifies the progressive tradition of mixing elements from different disciplines into a cohesive whole, all in service of a central harmonic vision. It confronts everything from sadness to relaxation to the warm revelation of a burden lifted. Behind it all is a profoundly mundane daily routine.
